could The Smiths be re-forming?

news reports

news: Friday 24th October 2008

Eighties seminal indie band The Smiths are reportedly close to reforming for a special one-off gig. The band split in 1987 after five years together when drummer Joyce successfully sued band songwriters Morrissey and Johnny Marr for unpaid royalties.

Frontman Morrissey said he would have nothing to do with a reunion, saying "I'd rather eat my own testicles than reform The Smiths — and that's saying something coming from a vegetarian."

However a massive pay offer looks set to change their minds, according to The Sun newspaper (here).

The newspaper says that the former band members have allegedly been offered the opportunity to reform for the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival in California next year, after former frontman Morrissey previously turning down a $4.5 million (£2.8 million) offer to perform at the event.

The Smiths ruled the alternative scene in the mid-Eighties but guitar god Marr's 1987 walkout signalled the end of their five years as a group.

Hopefully, one gig will lead to more, with some UK dates now a future possibility.
