  1. I went to The Sage to see Nick Cave solo, I was determined to hate the venue, it is one of the most ugly buildings you may have the missfortune to view. It deserves its nickname of 'The Slug' This isnt some media nickname, its just that as soon as you first see it you kind of pull a face and say, it looks like a bloody great glass slug, coz it does.

So up the steps and in we went

    Wow!

It was great inside, roomy and shapely, it looked wonderfull in its simplicity with the curved concrete and glass creating its own style.

In to the hall itself this one was 3000 seater hall (there are many halls of different size and composition) with the most perfect accoustics I have ever heard.

Much has been made of the fact that the building was purpose built with perfect accoustics but lets face it, every venue claims good accoustics. This was something else though.

Nick opened with a cacophony of demonic/angelic sound that hit you like a wave and bowled you over, the loudness was suprising (and I have been to some 'loud' gigs) and the fullness of sound was astonishing the clarity of sound was phenominal but the most suprising thing was the lack of damage to my ears after the event. I have never been to a gig that loud and not had my ears ringing before. (Friends who saw Lemon Jelly the following night commented the same)

    The Sage

    well done

    Thumbs up ;)

  2. Nice one...I can look forward to going without so much trepidation now *grins*

Well I went and it works, :D the foyer is partially blacked out and a couple of lead up walls painted black and so a nice little rock venue is made within the main building, which no longer broods and isnt quite as shiney as it once was, infact it looked positively tired. :D

Perhaps being opposite the newly built slug (the sage) is taking its toll.

  3. The Telewest Arena? The Metro Arena? The Arena.

I went to the arena when it first opened to see Pulp (yup, that long ago) and it was so bad I walked out half way through their show only to find that the sound comming through the speakers in the foyer was perfect in every way. Needless to say this pissed me off a bit and I never went back.

Over the years I have heard conflicting reports, some say the sound is sorted now and others say that like my experience, depending on where you are sitting (sitting!) depends on the sound quality.

Personally I kinda resent the arena, it is big & its shiney yes, it is also empty and hollow. It is too big, or too small, depending on your point of view, it has seats, guarenteed to keep the atmosphere down in my experience and it sitsd there lookking smug or perhaps brooding every time you go past it.

The Damned are playing in The Foyer of the venue next month. The expected ticket price has gone from £10-00 for a usual Damned gig to £17-50, well it is the arena?! and so I am drawn back.

Will my experience be improved upon? I hope so. I hope to come back in here and tell how good a venue The Arena is now, how they have improved , how they have solved all their lil problems and how welcoming it is and how luck we are to have it over and above all the ones we used to have. Or at least some of the above.

What are your experiences of The Arena?

  4. Top Venue, saw the Hives there a few weekends ago and loved it.

This is my fav venue of the year so far.

There is a bar inside the staged area and a bar outside it too, cant have too many vodka watering holes in my opinion. Plenty of seating for us old folks outside and good views from everywhere inside. Everything about it was welcoming.

The venue is small enough to be very intimate and close to the stage yet big enough to get stack of people in and create a charged atmosphere.

  5. As a visitor from out of town I was impressed, we dont have venues like this any more, all the old school has vanished to make way for glass and chrome, not a sticky carpet in sight.

Rock City was like revisiting a club from my youth and instantly brought a big grin to my face. :D

Quick and easy to get in with many smiles from the staff.

Top mid sized venue. Good view of the stage from everywhere though right at the back behind some giants your push your luck.
