The Georgian Theatre adds another feather to its cap with the booking of acclaimed guitar maestro and songwriter Martin Simpson for the launch of its Georgian Folk Season.

Martin Simpson is a jewel in the crown of traditional music and a stellar performer on the international stage winning numerous BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards over the years including carrying off two awards for Best Album and Best Original Song at this year’s awards.

During a career spanning over three decades he has played with the likes of Martin Carthy, June Tabor and Jackson Browne and is a firm favourite on the national and international folk circuit. Recent appearances on Later with Jools Holland and guest spots on BBC Radio 2’s Aled Jones Good Morning Sunday and Mike Harding’s Celtic Connections special suggest that Martin is reaching another career high.

In support we have rising local stars Cath and Phil Tyler who have just released their debut album Dumb Supper on local No-Fi label. Cath & Phil’s music beautifully blends the hard edged traditions of primitive Americana and English folk, using guitar, banjo, fiddle and more, all topped with their searing vocals and sublime harmonies. The album has been extremely well received with ecstatic on-air praise from the likes of Mike Harding and Bob Harris. Opening will be popular local singer songwriter Colin Holt.

Look out for further highlights of the Georgian Folk series over the coming months including Michael Chapman on Friday 13th June and Dick Gaughan on Saturday 20th September.

There is no admission charge for these events, but spaces are limited

To book a place email JILL@TEESMUSICALLIANCE.ORG.UK

Wednesday September 5th - There is no authority but your own authority.

Thursday September 6th – Life in a multi-million selling band – What’s it all about?

Ally McErlaine has been the guitarist with the group Texas for over twenty years and Bruce Watson a founder member of Big Country. In that time they have toured the world and contributed to the bands’ huge sales success. It seems like a perfect life, but how perfect is it? Come and hear what they have to say about their experiences in the music business.

Friday September 7th – Bring your daughter to the (slaughter) seminar.

This panel will look at how Rock and Metal is perceived, marketed and promoted by the music industry. Does this genre run in a parallel universe to that of the mainstream music business? Our panel all have a great deal of experience to draw upon in answering this question.

Panel featuring Dave Thorne (Noise Pollution Management), Eric Cook (Demolition Records) and Dave Ling (Music journalist for Classic Rock and Metal Hammer).
