  1. Manchester, la la la

Writing this Pet Shop Boys review got me thinking back to those days. Both the Simple Minds and PSB gigs referred to we in Birmingham, because Manchester didn't have a venue deemed big enough to host them. Things have changed radically since then. I've still never been to a gig at the MEN Arena, and probably never will, but there is no doubt that it's construction has helped the City get to where it is today - where the only place challenging it for Second City status musically is London.
  2. what we all up to then? I might go and see The Courteeners on Sunday
  3. Liverpool University (Student's Guild)

You were there too? It was a nice hall, but the bar service was the worst i have ever encountered. Mate went for pint half way through Das Wanderlust. 15 minutes into Art Brut's set he gave up. Are you putting your pics up anywhere?
  4. The perils of promoting!

Saturday night seemed to be going reasonably well with the soundchecks done. All the bands were happy and we were ready to roll. The numbers didn't seem to be as high as previous occasions, but there could have been a last minute rush, but then with 5 minutes to go to the first band the landlord came and had a word. "we have a little problem" he said. I thought it would be just that there were too many under agers trying to get in so "the sound engineer has walked out on me, taking his team with him" came as a bombshell. From then on it was sod's law. The first band went ok, but the bassist was over pissed and dominating the banter, which led to some embarrassing silences. The second band were beset bysound problems and wouldn't start until it was right, eventually their guitarist heading to the mixing desk to twiddle knobs to his satisfaction, as the landlord battled manfully on to get it right. Then the final band's amp blew, delaying their set by ten minutes. the numbers never got over 40, well down on previous nights, and because we'd taken the slot last minute, I was the only one of our regular trio available, so I was doing all the dj'ing and couldn't deal with any problems between bands. This also meant that the bands had to be trusted with the key to the storage room, and my night was capped beautifully when I got back there to find my bag and it's contents strewn across the floor. Luckily there was nothing of value in there. We lost £50 on the night, which we thought we'd saved with no sound guy to pay, but the landlord took it to pay his staff. And i was driving so couldn't have a drink! Still can't wait for the next one though! I'll try to remember making the girls scream by playing the record they wanted and take that positive thought with me!
  5. Gigs at the weekends more lively?

I think so. My brief Uni time in Preston certainly had weekend gigs, and Manchester does.
  6. Gigs at the weekends more lively?

I was going to say Exeter, but thought better of it!
  7. We've reviewed a few of Channel M's dedicated gig show on this site, but now the second series has finished you can watch some of the performances back on the Channel M website. I still recommend Gideon Conn... Click here to choose a set to watch
  8. Gigs at the weekends more lively?

I think they do try to play certain towns on a weekend, and the not-so-lively ones on a week night. A lot of bands will play Manchester or London on Friday or Saturday, but say, Stoke, during the week
  9. Hello

nice one, welcome to the site
  10. I'm involved in this, which is on tomorrow night if you are in the area. Tis a great venue with a selection of real ales
  11. klaxons

So, i saw them on Saturday, review on the front page. It's probably much to do with my age*, but on the whole I didn't get it. Their voices are terribly weak, particularly on the songs they have to sing. That said the shouty tracks, especially where they thrash that bass, were exhilerating. So i'm still undecided as to whether this is the future or the Emperor's new clothes. * almost certainly, you old bastard
  12. Manchester academy 1 refurbishment

They are much smaller. VERY roughly, the Academy 2 (or Manchester Uni MDh as it used to be known) is half the size of the Academy and the Academy 3 (formerly the Hop and Grape) is half the size of 2. I hope, if the Academy IS refurbing, they are considering putting a camber on the floor. It could do with a remodelling tbh, it's a long time since the Buzzcocks opened it some 17 years ago
  13. The Guillemots

The latest review on the Guillemots is full of praise for the band, whereas previously a reviewer (ok, me) had considered them to be pretentious overblown tosh, despite quite likely their records. So who's right egiggers? What's your take on Fyfe Dangerfield et al?
  14. Maximo Park Announce Tour

Art Brut are magnificent, and the price is worth the ticket to see them alone...
  15. NME awards

I knew it had gone downmarket, but awards for 'Sexiest' artists? WTF? That's the realm of Smash Hits surely? Time for Melody Maker to make a come back. Or at least Record Mirror!
