Mudhoney

Leeds Beckett University SU on Fri 30th Nov 2018

Mudhoney are on the road to promote their ninth full length studio album, Digital Garbage. Friday 30th of November saw them headline an evening of raucous rock and roll at Leeds Beckett Student's Union. Pioneers of the grunge scene all the way back in the 80's, Mudhoney have been plying their trade for quite some time so we expect a slick performance tonight as the band nonchalantly stroll on stage.

Mudhoney
The band open with Into The Drink. An old favourite from as far back as 1991. The sound is loud and heavy but the guitars have a jangly quality that oozes sonic style and reminds me that Mudhoney transcended the genre\pigeon hole that is grunge many years ago. This is lo-fi garage rock and roll at it's finest. Next is I Like It Small from the 2013 album Vanishing Point. A punk\blues jam that at times reminds me of Dead Kennedy's. Singer\guitarist Mark Arm is famous for his sneering, sarcastic delivery and he doesn't disappoint on Hey Neanderfuck. The first time tonight that we visit the new album.

Mudhoney
The songs come thick and fast. 2018 marks the 30th anniversary of Mudhoney and they celebrate their longevity tonight by playing an epic set of 23 songs and a 7 song encore. At times lead guitar player Steve Turner and Mark Arm bounce riffs off of each others guitars and it's very musical. At other times Mark puts his guitar away and treats us to a well studied Iggy Pop impersonation. Highlights included what is sure to become a Mudhoney anthem Kill Yourself Live followed by everyone's favourite Touch Me I'm Sick somewhere around the middle point. Bass player Guy Maddison never dropped a note and his huge smile never once slipped from his face. Legendary drummer Dan Peters sounded awesome all night and provided the rhythmical backbone for such a mammoth set. The main set ended with 21st Century Pharisees, my personal favourite from Digital Garbage. I'm in ecstasy as Mr Arm howls "He doesn't give a fuck about your Jesus".

Mudhoney
After a very short time indeed the band return for a seven song encore. They play Here Comes Sickness, Who You Driving Now and Sweet Young Thing (Ain't Sweet No More) before finishing off the evening with four cover songs. Ensam I Natt (The Leather Nun), The Money Will Roll Right In (Fang), Hate The Police (The Dicks) and finally Fix Me (Black Flag). The mostly middle aged crowd showed their appreciation by still being there at the end of a monstrous 30 song set. I've always
loved Mudhoney but they earned even more respect from me after this show. Grunge rockers that can go all night. Thank you guys. A fantastic evening.
