Glassjaw

Rock City, Nottingham on Tue 8th Apr 2003

Over the last few months Glassjaw have had to postpone their tour numerous times, due to frontman Daryl Palumbo's battle with Crohn's disease (a debilitating stomach disorder). However this time there was no health problems to prevent them from playing.

'Tip your Bartender' was the opening track for tonight's proceedings, and to say they were well received by the audience would be an understatement, although it was hard to work out if the audience were cheering because they liked the song or if it was to show their appreciation at Glassjaw for trying so hard to get their tour completed despite Daryl`s condition.

Daryl was on top form for this gig, bouncing from each side of the stage trying to get the crowd motivated, he had so much energy that it was impossible not to jump along with him. At certain points he would conduct the audience like a virtual orchestra, as well as trying to get them involved in singing the vocals. He's one of those rare breed of performers that comes across as being 100% genuine; when he sings, you can honestly feel the intensity of what he is really feeling inside. The pain is so well channeled through his voice.

All the songs you can imagine were in their set list such as 'The Gillette Cavalcade of Sports', 'Ape Dos Mil', 'Convectuoso', 'Piano', 'Cosmopolitan Bloodloss' and of course the crowd favourite 'Siberian Kiss'.

Admittedly there were times when Daryl was just screaming the lyrics, which made it impossible to work out what he was singing, however the audience did not seem to care, they were just happy that they finally got to see Glassjaw live.

There is one noticeable difference between their live show and their studio recordings. Their live show is a heavier than any of their recorded material, yet at the same time they manage to keep all the intricacy and complexity of their recorded material in their live show. For that reason alone they deserve all the success they get.

(A couple of days after this gig, Glassjaw had to cancel their UK tour due to Daryl's stomach disorder, we hope he makes a speedy recovery and hope to see Glassjaw playing again soon).
