Alice in Chains

O2 Academy Leeds on Sat 16th Jun 2018

With only 2 dates on this tour of the UK, it's a real coup for the only one of these outside of the capital to be in this West Yorkshire city. The Seattle heavy metal grunge band are back for a world tour. A new album is due to be released this Summer, the sixth by the band. And tonight this place is utterly packed out.

So packed out its hard to get a good view on the band. The snarling dual vocals made famous by the hugely missed Layne Staley and Jerry Cantrell are here from William DuVall, an excellent addition to the band after its sad history. Two albums into the band now, no longer the new guy, he has the crowd captivated with intensive vocals and presence. He also has guitar duties like during 'No Excuses'.

A backdrop of four areas with flashing lighting strips adds to the show as they dance in time to the music. It's the performances, not the lights that wow the condensed crowd though.

The newer hits from 2013's 'The Devil Put Dinosaurs Here' like 'Hollow' and 'Stone' are great neighbours for the nineties hits 'Man In A Box', 'Heaven Beside You' and 'Again'. The encore belter's 'Would?' and 'Rooster' of course raises the roof, as does 'Dam That River' and the time signature mind fuck that is 'Them Bones' which has everyone singing.

The darkly relentless heavy riffs, harmonising vocals and damn catchy songs make this band you need to see live. Or in this case, where it's a bit too busy to see, hear.
