Cud

The Cockpit, Leeds on Fri 22nd Jun 2012

Cud are back home to Leeds (not their home, but their band's home). Tonight's sold out show in The Cockpit is the end of a month long tour with original guitarist Mike Dunphy, only their second tour since disbanding in 1995 (bar the odd one off show). Leeds may not be their actual home but it is the home of Cud, and the people here tonight know that.

The psychedelic backdrop of never-ending circles of cow's udders with matching drum kit is pleasing to the eye, not as much though as Carl Puttham's floral shirt and bright sunglasses. Ever the smart dresser, Puttnam's eccentric moves need a certain amount of fashion flare to work, and he has it!

It all starts with 'Purple Love Balloon', and swirls around with their rock / funk / pop sounds. 'Only A Prawn In Whitby' is a classic. 'Rich And Strange', 'I’ve Had It With Blondes' and 'Strange Kind Of Love' all sway and pump the crowd. The encore with 'Vocally Speaking' and 'Van Van Van' goes down a storm, and they even run over to return to the stage to play 'Push and Shove'.

In the second half of the show the band are joined on stage by many a few of the crowd members. They are a jolly bunch; Puttnam mentioned about there being three Mike Dunphys from Leeds on Google, one a plumber, to which the crowd randomly and very wittingly started singing in a football chant "there's only three Mike Dunphys!" this cracked the band up. Back to the stage invasions though, there were people up on stage for every song after that, but as Puttnam pointed out not many were the same people, they were very politely taking it in turns! One sad thing is that someone stole Puttnam's 'Cud juice', which he was quite sad about. It was only water but the bottle was gold and everything...

It's an early finishing show for the Cockpits club night afterwards but the band play for well over an hour and a half. The lads will be back to support non other than Carter USM in Leeds in November, and before that The Wedding Present on August 26th At The Edge of The Peaks Festival in Holmfirth's Picturedrome (a clever setting for this Summer's weather trend!)
