Billy Idol

Rock City, Nottingham on Thu 17th Nov 2005

After a show-stopping performance at Download 2005, it was inevitable that a tour would follow. Thankfully one of those places on Mr Idol's list was Nottingham’s Rock City, and no one in their right mind would miss out and seeing a genuine 80’s punk-rock star playing such an intimate venue.

‘Super Overdrive’ got the proceedings under way, and from that point it was a roller coaster ride of thrilling music ranging from his current material off ‘Devils Playground’. I counted six songs from that album that were included in tonight’s show (Super Overdrive, Body Snatcher, Scream, Cherie, Rat Race, World Coming Down).

Most artistes would be criticised for including so many songs from the current album - however with Billy’s vast back catalogue and the fact that he was doing a set that went past the two hour mark, he can easily be forgiven for over indulging in his new album.

During the opening songs apart from the superb music, it was impossible not to be impressed by Billy Idols image/physique. It certainly looks like he has been working out a hell of a lot, and he looks as if he is still only in his twenties - lucky git!!!!

Billy Idol

As you would expect he was wearing his usual casual stage attire and was fully armed with a barrage of songs from over three decades, which could quite easily put some of his material in the category of ‘classic rock’. All the classics were included in tonight’s show - ‘Dancin’ with Myself’, ‘White Wedding’, and ‘Rebel Yell’ to name just a few. He even managed to squeeze in Generation X’s song ‘Ready, Steady, Go’.

It's rare to go to a show and not be bored by at least one of the songs, but this is an exception to the rule. Every song - new and old - were delivered with such energy by Billy and his band that it was impossible to even have the chance to be bored. If Billy wasn’t at the front of the stage entertaining the fans with his stage antics, one of the other band members would be - mainly Steve Stevens (guitarist) who was constantly jumping onto the PA monitors and belting out those intricate supersonic solos.

Billy Idol

Billy Idol has that mysterious and magical X-factor which you just cant define - he could quite easily just stand on stage and read from a telephone directory and still the audience would feel that they had got their moneys worth!

An incredible live show!
