Mortiis

Rock City, Nottingham on Sat 18th Sep 2004

After seeing a picture of Mortiis dressed up similar to a zombie but with pixie ears, it was with great curiosity that I wanted to catch these live, as so many times in the past- bands have relied on image rather than talent to impress people. It would be interesting to see if he was one of those artistes that uses image rather than talent to impress people.

Upon entering Rock City, it was impossible not to notice that the audience consisted of entirely Goth`s - no rockers, no skateboarder dudes, just pure Goths. So trying to negotiate the way to the front of the crowd was quite difficult- due to the lighting and everyone wearing black and having black hair it was with frequent occurrence that I would bump into someone accidentally because I could not see them. Well that’s my excuse, I’m pretty certain it had nothing to do with the quantity of alcohol consumed.

Mortiis

The band members took their positions on stage- to await the arrival of Mortiis. He arrived on stage looking like a cross between a zombie and a troll with pixie ears. The audience gave out a volcanic cheer and round of applause for the arrival of their hero.

I was expecting an underground industrial-Goth sound, however thankfully his music could be classed as melodic Goth-rock, it isn’t mainstream Goth music like Marilyn Manson and Cradle of Filth, it is pure non-commercial Goth music.

Admittedly I only know the recent single by Mortiis entitled ‘The Grudge’, therefore I can’t say if his voice was similar to what you would hear on the album, however despite that lack of knowledge, I can honestly say that this was one of the most entertaining gigs I have been to. The music was fantastic, especially a track called ‘Monolith’ and ‘Spirit In A Vacum’, which seemed to be welcomed by the audience.

Mortiis

He commanded the stage throughout the entire set, and he is one of those few musicians like Robbie Williams and David Bowie, who can keep you mesmerised throughout every single second of the set.

So if ever Mortiis is playing in your city, make the effort to go and catch him live, as I can guarantee you will enjoy the show and music. I was mightily impressed and would gladly go and catch them live again and again.

For once, here is a musician who is extremely talented but also has created a fantastic image as well.
