Embrace

Shepherds Bush Empire, London on Sun 7th May 2000

I wasn't expecting much from Embrace - I know they're popular etc etc, but after an unbelievably dreary set from Doves I wasn't quite in the mood for sitting through another long set from a band I wasn't familiar with.

I was expecting tons of ego from a band that were originally penned as the new Oasis. So when Danny strolled on stage and started proceedings in the most polite manner (your Mum would LOVE him) ever seen from a bonafide rock/pop star I was a little surprised. Whoever compared them to Oasis should be shot, because Embrace are the most magnificent live band I have seen in a while.

No frills, no gimmicks, just good ol' singalonga rock 'n' roll. No faffing around, can't-remember-what-the-hell-the-lyrics-are moments, just a bunch of mates playing live and loving every minute of it.

It was one of those occasions when you realise they have had tons of hits which have been putting a smile on your face everytime they come on the radio- "Come Back To What You Know", "My Weakness Is None Of Your Business", "You're Not Alone" and "Save Me" to name just a few.

And if you don't know all the words just sing along with the "Na na na" bits. Go and see Embrace at a festival this summer because they'll probably make the sun shine.
