Sharon Corr

The Glee Club, Birmingham on Tue 23rd Sep 2014

Everyone remembers The Corrs from the early 90's, it would've been hard not to remember them to be honest. With five studio albums and hit single after hit single, including 'Runaway', 'Dreams' (Fleetwood Mac Cover), 'Forgiven Not Forgotten' and 'Breathless'.

The Siblings from Dundalk have been on hiatus since 2006, raising families and pursuing solo projects in their own right. Sharon Corr has done just this, releasing her first album 'Dream of You' back in 2010 and her second album just recently,'The Same Sun'.

I was a bit sceptical about tonight to be honest, although I had seen Sharon Corr back in 2009 at Isle of Wight Festival and I was lucky enough to meet her, which in actual fact didn't do me any favours as it made me feel like a whale and the need for a strict diet was in order.

Before tonight's show I had read a couple of other reviews from previous shows on the tour and it mentions the smallish turnout i.e. tickets sold, tonight was a bit better with approx 150 people clambering to be up the front within touching distance of their idol.

The Glee Club is an immense venue and tonight was no exception, Corr was backed by a five piece band of accomplished musicians, she was the jewel in the crown totally.

A no frills stage, just Corr and her band, no where to hide. Would she measure up to anywhere near Andrea's vocal prowess? The answer to that is "Yes." I was quite surprised how silky smooth her vocals were and how strong and powerful the vocals to each song were.

Drinking herbal tea throughout the show, not very rock 'n' roll eh??!! And chatting throughout about various tales including how she loved playing in Birmingham and how music was her passion and her life.

The 21 song set was a mix of old and new, a few classic Corrs tracks were thrown in for good measure including 'Radio', 'Dreams' and 'So Young', with a few covers too, which were absolute gems in the set: Bronski Beat's 'Smalltown Boy' and 'Dream A Little Dream'.

Tonight was simple, an adoring crowd, an amazing band and silky smooth vocals, where the vocalist actually enjoyed performing, it wasn't a chore.

The tracks from the new album were quality, I might even go back for another helping.

I was pleasantly surprised with the quality of the music and the songs that were showcased tonight, even the new material made me sit back and think, Actually this Sharon Corr is quite good??!!

The UK tour continues Until Mid October, so see if you can catch her if you can, you'll be pleasantly surprised.
