KT Tunstall / Billy Lockett

Symphony Hall, Birmingham on Wed 13th Nov 2013

I had been looking forward to tonight's show for quite a while now, after seeing Ms Tunstall at the Minack Theatre in Cornwall showcasing new album 'Invisible Empire/Crescent Moon' earlier in the year.

We got to Symphony Hall ¾ way through the support act Billy Lockett, this guys voice certainly packs a punch and filled every nook and cranny of the Hall, with just a piano and guitar for accompaniment all the way through the set.

It was an absolute pleasure to hear him and feel the passion in his voice with every song and note. He touched a raw never with me, his voice seemed to carry and hold every note, I loved it, definitely a fan now.

He cracked jokes throughout the set and even stood in the foyer to sign his latest EP which the audience definitely loved, if Facebook and Twitter are anything to go by.

The stage set was pretty basic, just a few lights and the invisible empire back drop, it was all about going back to basics. An acoustic guitar, loop system and a piano for company. KT Tunstall came on stage at around 9 to wolf whistles and heckling, first number to kick proceedings off was one of the title tracks to the new album 'Invisible Empire', it went down a storm and set the tone for the rest of the set.

A stonking 16 song set which only made me love Tunstall even more. Showcasing her enormous talent as a solo artist, showing what she does best. An amazing voice and an amazing talent, it's no wonder I've liked this women for so long, she oozes talent from every pore.

I must admit I'm not a big fan of the new album, I only like a few of the tracks, I much prefer all the electric stuff Tunstall has done, but the acoustic versions of the songs only make you appreciate how talented she is and what an amazing scribe she is.

The set was littered with hit after hit from countless albums, but tonight was about Tunstall's latest offering of stripped back to basics album 'Invisible Empire/Crescent Moon'. Songs that make you listen to every single word, that's what it’s all about.

The set was peppered with little gems including Tunstall favourite 'Black Horse and the Cherry Tree', this was pure class and left me wanting even more. Tunstall classics infiltrated the set, which I loved, 'Other Side of the World', which reminded me of when I met my partner and we were 178 miles apart, subsequently moving in together and getting married.

One cover was thrown in for good measure and Tunstall provided a show stopping performance, 'Default', apparently by one of her favourite bands of the moment, 'Atoms for Peace', leaving the audience breathless and roaring and clapping to their hearts content afterwards, 'more', yes we did want more.

One of my favourite Tunstall pieces is the 'Scarlet Tulip' EP, seriously love this collection of songs.   It epitomises what Tunstall is all about. Only one song off this little cracker tonight and that was eerie 'Alchemy', absolutely beautiful rendition, made all the goose bumps come up on the back of my neck.

Throughout the show Tunstall told numerous stories and harped on about how amazing Symphony Hall is.   Apparently tonight was a first, it was the night she was releasing a little book of poetry and she explained how one of the songs from tonight’s set started out as a poem (Yellow Flower).

What an enjoyable night, it was immense and I still think Tunstall is one of the most underrated artists in the UK. Everyone needs to jump on the bandwagon and see her live.
