Tonight, extreme metalheads in our nation's capital are morbidly spoilt as three gigs are on offer in the city; the sold out Live Evil pre-show featuring Antichrist and Deathammer, the free entry Voices gig and the goregrind activities of the humorously named Dutchmen Prostitute Disfigurement and Rectal Smegma. Decisions, decisions, decisions.
Rectal Smegma are not a common sight to behold on these shores so such a rarity should not be ignored, particularly considering how well they translate their music into a live environment. From the onset of opener and title track of new album 'Become the Bitch', the crowd are very appreciative of the thick grooves emanating from the tiny stage. Their brand of goregrind follows in the steps of fellow countrymen Rompeprop, complete with bouncy rhythms, that elicit a few dances from audience members, growls, shouts and pig squeals for vocals and crushing brutal death metal fervour.
The setlist focuses heavily on 'Become the Bitch' material, leaping through such light-hearted numbers including 'Double D Deathpunch', 'Two Girls One Cupcake', 'I'm Loving It' and'Fistkiss'. Older numbers still sharing the same fat grooves and aired out tonight include 'Fuckface' and 'Get Dirty Bitch'. The four piece come across as likeable on stage with their humorous attitude and desperation for beer, resulting in an audience volunteer buying them for the band. The energy is contagious with Rectal Smegma headbanging and the occasional dance move from frontman Yannic.
The spectators' response is rapturous for a band who are such a rarity to see in the UK and just as the Dutchmen are about to leave the stage, the crowd response has Rectal Smegma asking if they could play just another song. Fortunately, they are given the green night and bounce away for another song, much to the attendees delight.
Headliners Prostitute Disfigurement layer back the goregrind in favour of exclusive brutal death metal, akin to Cannibal Corpse's Corpsegrinder efforts with more brutality attached to it. Opening with 'Body to Ravage' from the 'Left in Grisly Fashion' release, the Dutch death metallers begin to hack and slash through a violent collection of sinister metal. The vast majority of the setlist is drawn from the past two albums, the aforementioned and the previous 'Descendants of Depravity'. Prime cuts include 'Carnal Rapture', 'The Sadist King and the Generalissimo of Pain', 'Torn in Bloated Form', 'In Sanity Concealed' and 'Victims of the Absurd'. The older and more provocatively titled 'Gay Bar Massacre' and 'Cadaver Blowjob' make an appearance in the setlist and illustrate how far the band have progressed since their beginnings in 2000.
Despite the crowd thinning out noticeably throughout the show, Prostitute Disfigurement staunchly continue to put on a solid performance which results in the audience pummelling each other in a furious mosh pit; a very different kind of energy to Rectal Smegma's dynamic grooves. Closing with 'Freaking on the Mutilated', tonight has been a gruesome start to the weekend ahead and those who attended tonight's event definitely left with smiles on their faces.
