Caro Emerald

Symphony Hall, Birmingham on Mon 16th Sep 2013

After hearing good things from my Hairdresser and having Caro Emerald's latest album offering played continuously a couple of weekends on the bounce at my brothers, I decided I needed to go see what all the fuss was about.

So tonight was all about seeing if all the hype I'd been told and material I’d listened to came across live, or whether Ms Emerald was actually good.

Symphony Hall is an amazing venue and tonight was no exception, it showcases artists like Caro Emerald at their best, the acoustics and audience are usually astounding, best gig I've seen so far here was Emile Sande and that was mind blowing, just the whole vibe was immense.

Tonight, surprisingly there's no support act, but in essence you can understand why when you get two hours plus entertainment from the star of the show.

Ms Emerald came on stage at 8.30ish to rapturous applause even before she uttered one single note. Looking like she's just stepped out of one of those old black and white movies, you know the ones your grand-parents or parents used to watch. Very sultry and sexy and of course 1940's women were very curvaceous, I don't seriously know what I was expecting from tonight, but it certainly wasn't a two hour blockbuster extravaganza of entertainment for sure.

Backed by a note perfect 8 piece band, Ms Emerald wowed the audience with tracks from both studio albums, 'Deleted Scenes From the Cutting Room Floor and 'The Shocking Miss Emerald', a 20+ song set including delicious delights such as 'Liquid Lunch and 'That Man. It's hard not to nod your head back and forth (like Churchill from the insurance ad) or tap your feet as the beats are so infectious.

Sexy, sultry and a strong powerful voice, what else would you want from a female vocalist. The whole package is what Ms Emerald is, thank god I made the effort to come to see her live tonight.

Having the audience eat out of her hand is probably an everyday occurrence for Ms Emerald, it's no wonder most of her dates had sold out months ago.

The current album has been number one in the charts for weeks and you can understand why when you hear it live, classic jazz infused with modern pop beats that create a breath of fresh air in the current stale music scene., I find Ms Emerald unique, it's all about the voice, no fancy pyrotechnics or dancers to distract your eye, just an amazing band, gobsmackingly astounding vocals and an atmosphere that would take you back to the 40's era, you could just imagine yourself being transported to a jazz club somewhere with Ms Emerald centre stage. Fantastic!

Ms Emerald bought the house down, every song was effortless and pitch perfect, she exuded sex appeal and sultryness, I was totally in awe, lingering on every word. Absolutely lush.

Its shows like this that make you realise why you love listening to music so much and actually seeing artists that can put on a show and entertain, the voice is what it's all about and tonight definitely showed that.
