Jessie J

Liverpool Academy (Liverpool University) on Sat 22nd Oct 2011

I’ve never been lucky enough to see the talented Jessie J ever before and I think I may have shot myself in the foot! I missed the last tour and even missed her appearance at V Festival this year, so I had to pull out all the stops to make a concerted effort this tour.

Tickets for the current tour, which is frequenting every town near you, sold out quicker than the i-phone 4, it’s quite funny because so many friends went to see one of the Birmingham dates so I was waiting with baited breath to see the show in Liverpool.

We got to the venue just in time to see the last few songs from the ever talented Devlin. He proved his salt as a support act by whipping the crowd up in to a totally frenzy. Best song of the set, that I did manage to catch, was ‘Runaway’, it was an absolute masterpiece and I think the audience agreed with me.

The venue took me back in time, it was like an old school hall, and it was packed to the rafters, all hot and sweaty. The merchandise was fantastic but I was a bit of a scrooge and didn’t want to part with £25 of my money, seemed slightly steep to me for a tour t-shirt, but if you’re a fan you’ll buy one.

Even before Jessie stepped on to the stage the fans were screaming and going mental, ‘Jessie, Jessie, Jessie’; She came on stage just before 9 in a little blue number, a cat suit which looked like it had been wrapped on to her body: looked so tight I honestly don’t know how she got in it. This was topped off with the most amazing Doctor Marten Boots I’ve ever seen. I dunno what’s with the purple wig but I like it.

According to Jessie this was one of the smallest venues she’d played and one of the loudest audiences she had on the current tour, I can concur, as she’s got teen fans and under 14’s they made themselves heard throughout the show, which was amazing.

A 17 song set filled with chart toppers and songs from Jessie’s current album. ‘Big White Room’ was the first song to kick off the set, then one of my favourites ‘Who’s Laughing Now’, the audience were like Piranhas in the Amazon, totally frenzied and well up for anything. ‘Rainbow’, ‘Stand Up/One Love’, ‘Casualty of Love’ and amazing ‘Nobody’s Perfect’, New song ‘My Shadow’ which was totally amazing and has whetted my appetite to hear more new material if this song is anything to go by.

A surprising cover of Luther Vandross’s ‘Never Too Much’ was up next followed by ‘Abracadabra’ and ‘I Need This’. The band went off stage and Jessie was accompanied by the bass and lead guitarist for an acoustic set of three songs which were ‘Technology’, ‘Up’ and ‘L.O.V.E’. Loved this part of the show as it showcased Jessie’s vocals, I do love her cause she stands up for what she believes in and is actually very talented.

Best song of the night ‘Do it like a Dude’, Everyone was well up for it. Jessie donned a gold cap and said this was her costume stage. It was quite amusing as kids where sitting on their relatives shoulders giving it all that rock god–esque sign and when the swear words came along the kids loved it, think it was the one occasion when the youngsters were actually allowed to swear.

All I can say is that this girl oozes talent and it’s no wonder she has fans (‘Heartbeats’) that idolise her and wait for hours and hours outside the venue just to get on the front row. This show was well worth the effort to travel a 180 mile round trip and I wouldn’t have missed it for the world. Jessie your amazing, carry on the good work.
