The Wombats

iTunes Festival, Roundhouse, Camden on Sat 16th Jul 2011

The world needs The Wombats, it's been in recession for far too long.

This wasn't a gig for the music snobs out there, and even I lowered my voice upon admitting I was looking forward to seeing the Liverpudlians live.

The Wombats went down a storm at Glastonbury with fans go wild in the mud and I was hoping they wouldn't disappoint in London. I need not have feared.

Camden's Roundhouse provided the perfect setting for a band who are trying to get the industry to take them seriously. And seriously, they were pretty darn good.

The three-piece have outgrown the bubblegum pop of their early days and matured into the promising indie-rockers I saw before me last night.

'Techno Fan' and 'Jump Into The Fog' from the recently released 'This Modern Glitch', went down a treat with fans singing along to every word.

'Patricia the Stripper' added a bit of fun while 'Anti-D' was sung with heart wrenching gusto and left me feeling sentimental.

But it was the early hit 'Moving to New York' which proved that The Wombats formula for really great songs works.

The venue itself has to be one of the hippest live music haunts and an impressive lighting rig showed the band in all its glory.

Giant screens provided visual commentary and the sight of hundreds of pop fans forming a little mosh pit (remember these are The Wombats we're talking about) brought a smile to the most stern of faces.

I don't know whether it was the fact it was free or whether people really have had enough of moaning, but never before have I seen so many enjoy dancing like lunatics.

The highlight, predictably, and on that theme was the final track – 'Let's Dance To Joy Division'. As the band rocked the stage, the fans rocked the dance floor.

And all together we celebrated the irony, that The Wombats make us so happy.
