Children Of Bodom

Rock City, Nottingham on Thu 7th Apr 2011

When you think of heavy metal/rock bands from Finland chances are you will possibly think of Hanoi Rocks or HIM, and quite possibly never hear any mention of Children Of Bodom (COB). Judging by their performance at Rock City COB are flying the flag high and proud for Finnish rock bands and quite possibly setting the standard with their live performances.

I think its fair to say that over the last twelve months COB have finally been given the success they truly deserve after spending many years constantly touring and impressing crowds all over the world. Their latest album 'Relentless, Reckless Forever' went platinum in Finland, and they have been playing to sold out venues on their current tour, and if that isn't a sign of success then I don't know what is, oh and a guitar magazine award for best guitar player was awarded to Alexi (vocalist, guitarist) just for good measure.

Children Of Bodom

Rock City was packed to the rafters for Children Of Bodom's gig. This is certainly a band that appreciate their fans, they even did a signing earlier in the evening to get up close and personal to their worshippers.

COB are one of the few bands around that don't need any gimmicks to put on a great live show.

Their talent alone is able to keep you mesmerised for an entire show, they arrive on stage to a heart-warming applause of appreciation and rather than wasting time with pleasantries they kick straight into the opening track 'Not My Funeral' taken from their latest album 'Relentless Reckless Forever'. Jesus Christ, this is one band that the term heavy metal was designed for. It is meaty riff laden music that shatters your chest cavity with every beat. In a lot of ways they remind me of Metallica (back in the Kill 'Em All days) when they just didn't care if their music was liked or not, they played what they wanted to play on their own terms and if you don't like it, well I guess you know where the door is. I personally hope they never lose this attitude as it certainly gives us old school metal fans a slight glimmer of hope that metal isn't dead, it is on the verge of being resurrected with bands like COB being at the forefront of raising it from its dead and buried state.

As per usual frontman Alexi delivered the goods both vocally and musically.

Children Of Bodom

The set list catered for long standing loyal fans as well as the newly converted fans with songs from albums as far back as 'Are You Dead Yet?' up to the most recent album 'Relentless Reckless Forever'. Children Of Bodom even included their more catchy tunes 'Shovel Knockout' and 'Roundtrip To Hell And BackBodom Beach Terror' which is a rarity for them to play live.

Predictably they saved 'Was It Worth It?' for the encore, as well as ending the night with their signature tune 'Hate Crew Deathroll'.
