Two Door Cinema Club

The Other Rooms, Newcastle upon Tyne on Mon 15th Mar 2010

Two Door Cinema are one those bands that can be easily described as being an indie/electro crossover type, and their sound, for the most part supports.

The three piece, hailing from Bangor, Northern Ireland, have, over the past 18 months, began to make a little name for themselves, and hype surrounding the band is beginning.

Tonight's show in Newcastle is a complete sell out, and as the band announce their biggest UK tour date, commencing in September, there's a clear feeling that this year, will belong very much in part to Two Door Cinema Club.

Signed to the uber cool, electronic music label, Kitsune, and releases on two of the very popular 'Kitsune Maison' really helped the band secure good press and exposure. It was also the label that secured the band tour supports for fellow Kitsune acts, Autokratz, Delphic and Foals, further helping the band. Helped further by their inclusion in the BBC's Sound of 2010 list, popularity for the Northern Ireland trio couldn?'t be bigger right now.

March 1st saw the band release their debut album, 'Tourist History', and since then things have gone a bit crazy for them, with previous singles 'I Can Talk' really starting to become an indie dance floor favorite, and on their album, and previous single releases through Kitsune, I can say that I've always been impressed with the productions qualities, and with highly regarded France dance music producer, Phillipe Zdar, of Cassius, at the helm, it's unsurprising.

Live, however, I found there to be nothing out of the ordinary with the band, with the band coming on stage, playing their set, and playing what I thought was very one dimensional, with a lot of the songs sounding very similar when placed together in one set list.

The band create the kind of indie guitar music that was popular back in 2006, sounding like a lot of the emerging Leeds bands of the time, but with live guitars, bass and vocals over programmed synthesizers and drum beats, it really gives the music a more modern age, fit for today?s synth favoured music scene.

That's not to say that I thought that band, far from it. They offered a musically tight performance, really worked the crowd well to make them their own. The band obviously know how to make a really classy pop record, with 'I Can Talk', 'Something Good Can Work' and 'Cigarettes in the Theatre' all really demonstrating this, all showing off the band's ability to create harmonies and guitar riffs that the audience can sing along too even when there are no vocals, and to achieve that is really something.

Influence of recent bands such as Foals and the Cribs is evident, as well as their electronic stance and it's their ability to make those influences their own on record and live that will see Two Door Cinema Club do very well. Their ability to make you sing and dance around is quite something.
