Bollocks to Poverty: Work it! competition announced

organise an event in your area and you could win a summer backstage at festivals

news: Thursday 11th June 2009

International anti-poverty charity ActionAid have launched a Bollocks to Poverty: Work it! competition.

The competition is to encourage people all over the UK to put on an event in their area and add it to the Bollocks to Poverty line-up.

The event can be anything, such as a house party or club night, a fashion show or a gig with a line-up of the best unsigned bands in town. To be in the running, it just has to take place before August 10th 2009, with the best, rather than the biggest, event taking the top prize.

The organiser of the winning event will have the opportunity to become ActionAid's Bollocks to Poverty Tour Ambassador for 2009, which means going backstage at summer festivals and interviewing bands and artists.

Entries for Bollocks to Poverty: Work it! will be judged by a top panel of experts, including Laurent Barnard from Gallows. In order to judge the best event, ActionAid are asking entrants to blog about their event on its website, using loads of photos and sharing the experience from start to finish with the world - the good bits and the bad! The winner will be the blogger who attracts a mixture of the most votes and blog comments from the public and who makes the judges feel as though they were actually there.

The winner will also organise the Bollocks to Poverty Christmas Party and be responsible for making it a night to remember! It doesn't matter where in the UK the winner is based, as the role does not require London office work and all travel expenses will be covered.

Laurent from punk band Gallows said: "ActionAid work hard to make sure people less fortunate are provided with the same opportunities as the rest of us. Bollocks To Poverty: Work It! is the perfect chance to not only do something positive for charity but to also get together with friends and put on whatever kind of night you wish, be it a rock show or a house party. This could even kickstart a career as a party liaison expert which we all know would be a lot of fun!"

Helen Hector, who heads up the Bollocks to Poverty Tour at ActionAid, added, "We are really exciting about finding someone to be ActionAid's Bollocks to Poverty Tour Ambassador. It doesn't matter whether you have loads of events experience or have never even organised a night out, we'll provide you with loads of advice, as well as posters, stickers and other freebies to make your event a success!"

Bollocks to Poverty is all about showing your outrage at global poverty and injustice by doing something you love for ActionAid. The most important thing is that, whether your event wins or not, you'll be helping poor communities fight their way out of poverty with the awareness and money you raise. So get planning!
