The Lost Souls / Goeightyeight

Sat Nav systems do not like Bradford. The Gasworks venue is conveniently situated near the Forster Square train station, but neither the technical map in front of us of the road signs in Bradford know where this vital part of the public transport system is. After calling out a Bradford local to direct us, we finally reach the venue, tucked down a one way street between Millets and some bank.

Inside is a nice little cavern with tables and many lights enticing you to the cheap drinks offers. If I lived in Bradford this would be my second home (if I could ever find it again that is). There are only two bands on tonight, so at least we haven't missed anything despite out detours down industrial estates and what not.



This is Wakefield band Goeightyeight's first show. Formed after the split of These Silent Movies this arrangement involves a harder and less emo style from the foursome. Comparisons to Hot Water Music and Jimmy Eat World come to mind, with fantastic lead guitar complete with all the twiddly bits, topped off with brash bass and drums and gruff vocals.

For a first show this is rather good; hardly a technical hitch can be heard for a band that have not been going long at all, and the crowd are taking notice. On first arriving at the venue I thought they would be playing to a handful of us, but the place soon fills up before their set. I can only see the band going from strength to strength if this is how they start out. Tracks like 'Santa Carlo' and 'Have Rocket, Will Travel' stand out.

Headliners for the night are Leeds heavyweights The Lost Souls (not to be confused with local rappers Lost Souls. They are quite different). Another band forming from the ashes of a band that was not meant to be, singer Karl used to be in Spin, a band that won Virgin Radio Best Unsigned Band and got to support Bon Jovi and Nickelback (seen as a prize to some...).



These guys give the impression that they are too large for the stage. I reckon they are. Their sound is crisp and makes whoever was not paying attention before get up and listen. For recent album 'Innocence' the band themselves say, and I quote "Blood, sweat and tears have gone into this record but as Michelangelo did to the Sistine Chapel, The Lost Souls have done to Innocence". Ahem?

Big sounds, probably big egos, but good guitar riffs and vocals, though a little over the top for tonight I feel. They need a bigger venue to be taken seriously, as playing to a small crowd such as this must be a downer for them. Not to say that it stunts their performance; it's high octane all the way baby. Songs like 'Turn The Lights Out When You Leave' and 'Breath' are classic rock songs. I may become a fan; I just have to adjust to them first.
