legendary line-up promised for Manchester vs Cancer

with fireworks?

news: Thursday 3rd January 2008

Manchester vs Cancer is set to roll next month and it's rumoured in The Sun's Bizarre column (here) to showcase an ego filled supergroup, fronted by Oasis' bad boy Liam Gallagher which could lead to some on stage fireworks.

The band dubbed 'Manchester United' also contains Ian Brown, and members of Freebass - the bass-laiden band featuring The Smiths' Andy Rourke, New Order's Peter Hook and Mani from Primal Scream, calling on help from fellow Mancunian stars, singer Tim Burgess of The Charlatans and Primal's frontman Bobby Gillespie to guest in the recording of the band's debut album.

There's no reports on how recording went but egos must have been at full kilter and surely putting Ian and Liam in a room together with Bobby for any length of time must have had its moments.

Word is that if the Cancer show is a success the supergroup could follow it up by touring the big festivals this summer.

Rourke who organises the charity show is planning to have other headline acts lined up to perform including The Verve, James, Inspiral Carpets and Happy Mondays. Rourke stated, "This year's gig is going to be talked about for years to come. We've got some of the biggest bands of the moment lined up as well as some legendary acts."

Keeping that lot under control backstage without adding a volatile Liam, who could throw one of his legendary tantrums is going to be a hard task for someone! Let's hope with Liam being a Man City fan and Ian Brown a United fan the clash between the two teams a fortnight before doesn't lead to any bust ups during rehearsals!

Manchester Versus Cancer charity concert will take place on Saturday 23rd February at the MEN Arena. Tickets are available from See Tickets, Ticketmaster.
and Ticketline.
