Varsity Drag / Pylon / Everybody Is Going To Die / Tim Butane

Jockey, Wakefield on Fri 26th Jan 2007

There is a little buzz about Wakefield tonight as a member of the much loved Lemonheads is due to appear in our very own Jockey. I couldn’t believe it either. The local lads are going to start us of however, firstly in the form of Tim Butane, a punk band with original guitar riffs and striking vocals.

For the next band there are a lot of people putting earplugs in. Intrigued I notice that on stage three, yes three drum kits are starting to take shape. Everybody Is Going to Die are Wakefield’s very best masters of noise, and tonight we are treated to the full line up of six members. Now I have seen The Melvins use two drummers and that is amazing to watch; very symmetrical and very loud. Just how EIGTD manage to get three drummers going at the same time shows some talent, if you can take your fingers out of your ears long enough to fully appreciate them (the band themselves urge you to cover up your lugs as they will surely be damaged otherwise).

To completely change the sound are Pylon, more Wakefield regulars. These indie rockers have beautiful songs that immediately get your foot tapping, and feature the usual kit as well as an electronic organ, just to top of the sound. They are not as heavy as the previous bands, though not soft; they always receive a warm welcome in the Jockey. The harmonised vocals sound great with layers of guitar and organ melodies that don’t trip themselves up and flow together well. The best songs of the night come from ‘The Standard Fight’.

Then, after the obligatory raffle, it’s time for what everyone’s been waiting for. A few people are put off by the professionalism of Varsity Drag, as the band seem to take a while to realise that this is the Jockey and there is not really a lot of time to sound check, if any. After a while though the co-founder of The Lemonheads and his band get underway to showcase songs from new album ‘For Crying Out Loud’.

Ben Deily is wearing a boiler suit and big boots, like he has just finished a factory shift. There are lots of good songs on the way, like ‘Starfish’ and ‘Blackout’. After a crowd member shouts out “play some f*cking Lemonheads!” Ben repeats his request and we get ‘7 Powers’ from the ‘Lick’ album. The set is quite long and the punky sound to the songs fits in well here, though with the time now midnight some people have left and unfortunately the place looks rather empty. But those in attendance enjoy the show.
