another venue bites the dust

London Hammersmith Palais

news: Tuesday 23rd January 2007

A west London venue that has played host to hundreds of big and small live acts, including the likes of U2 and The Rolling Stones, is set to close down.

It was announced yesterday (Monday January 22nd) that the closing date for London's Hammersmith Palais has been scheduled for April.

Music fans have been campaigning to have the building listed, preventing its demolition. But Fulham and Hammersmith Council have now approved a proposal by Parkway Properties (property developers) to knock it down and transform it into a restaurant and office block.

BBC 6 music spoke to Hammersmith and Fulham councillor Lucy Ibimy who said: "We recognise the contribution the Palais has made to the west London music scene, but the golden days of the club are long gone."
