Tiny Dancers

Manchester Night & Day on Mon 13th Nov 2006

With the music industry becoming significantly more about the fashion and look of a band, rather than their actual sound or talent, it’s a rare breath of fresh air to find a band who go against these modern ideals and dare to not take themselves too seriously.

Ironically, playing at the overtly cutting edge and fashionable Night and Day, Tiny Dancers are such a rare find. A random collection of what can only be described as stuff cramped up the already sparse stage, and the 5 piece filled the remaining spaces with their instruments. Bounding onto the stage like an explosion, lead singer David Kay looked comically cool in a poncho with what looked like tribal war paint on various parts of his face, whilst the rest of the band dressed just as eclectically. One seemed to be in his pyjamas. Anyways, to the point, a band that do not seem too obsessed with Toni & Guy haircuts or drain pipe jeans.

To the ears, Tiny Dancers really are a delight to listen and sing along to. Elements of folk rock mixed with casual indie. The choruses are catchy and the tunes melodic. Tempos varied through out songs, from the clap along “Bonfire of the night” to the more chilled “I’ve got to go” and the brilliant “Hannah we know.” The bands influences are evident in that of The Flaming Lips and particularly Beck, using that mish mash of all genres collaborated into one distinct sound. An infectious band indeed, and there was not a still foot or hand in the house as people bounced along to the happy sounds of the music.

Tiny Dancers’ music will not change the world. It may not even get distinctly huge, but credit is due to them and their ability to make a room full of people dance and smile and feel like they got their moneys worth. A most enjoyable night and with gigs coming up with The Spinto Band, I’m sure this will be a good few months for the boys.
