The Puppini Sisters

Nottingham Social on Tue 31st Oct 2006

Watching The Puppini Sisters perform live is certainly an entertaining experience, if somewhat surreal- probably made even more surreal by the fact it was Halloween and so most of the audience were dressed up as ghouls, witches, skeletons, devils etc.

The Puppini Sisters arrived on stage dressed in fabulous bright red ball gowns, which you could easily imagine somebody like Marilyn Monroe wearing when she was at the peak of her fame!

For those of you who haven’t yet heard of The Puppini Sisters they are a band of three female vocalists who have a fine talent for producing wonderful ear-warming vocal harmonies in a style that closely resembles The Andrews Sisters. If you think about the music that was around in the 1930’s and 1940’s then you will have a good idea of what to expect from The Puppini Sisters.

They stage theatrics and a selection of songs that they have ‘Puppinified’, bringing a refreshing change to the current mundane material that is currently topping the charts. The three vocalists are all able to hold the audiences attention on their own and at times you are not too sure which one to pay attention to. Steph is the tall and sultry one. Kate is the blonde and rather cheeky one, and Marcella is the one who has eyes that can at times look quite menacing and almost psychopathic.

As well as modifying old songs like ‘Mr Sandman’, they also slip in some more recent tunes all done with that wartime feel- such as Kate Bush’s classic ‘Wuthering Heights’.

The Puppini Sisters are one of those bands that you must see live- I can guarantee that regardless of your own music tastes- you will enjoy this show from the beginning to the very end.

Surprisingly good- and without question one of the most memorable gigs that I’ve been to for quite some time!!!
