new music venue opens in Glasgow

My Latest Novel & The Grim Northern Social play launch night

news: Friday 13th October 2006

This weekend sees the opening of a new live music venue in Glasgow. The 500 capacity venue is called The Classic Grand, in reference to its Georgian Architecture.

The venue has had many different faces but originated as one of Glasgow’s first cinemas back in 1915. From then on it has changed from a nightclub to a gay bar and eventually to a live music venue.

Tonight (Friday October 13th) is the opening night of The Classic Grand and My Latest Novel and Grim Northern Social will both be performing at the launch party.

Speaking exclusively to eGigs Alec Downie (Classic Grand events manager) described the venue as a "miniature Brixton academy", going on to say that they hoped to "complement an already vibrant Glasgow music scene".

£150,000 has been put into the venues PA and lighting and acts have already been booked for the next few months including Ed Harcourt on Sunday 22nd October, Ginger from the Wildhearts on Tuesday 31st October, and a DJ set from New Order this weekend.

As well as the main room there is a smaller 240 capacity room which is designed for aftershows, launches, previews and other functions.

The idea of the venue is a chance for the artists to get close to the fans and Downie mentioned that they hoped to secure some larger Scottish acts (like Primal Scream and Texas) in the future for some small intimate performances.
