Bic Runga

The Life Café, Manchester on Tue 6th Jun 2006

The Life Café is situated in Manchester’s higher calibre of Deansgate, and is the perfect venue for a small and intimate gig. Walking into the relaxed and chilled out room, I had the surprising pleasantry of not being the oldest person in the room, and nor was I surrounded by sweating 14 year old emo kids with fashionable haircuts. In fact there wasn’t an emo or a kid in sight as I got to the bar and checked out the place. The Life Café definitely sets a standard of class, and the perfect place to host Bic Runga.

Bic Runga appeared on the stage with that sense of meekness and modesty that instantly portrayed her as cute. Dressed in a pink retro dress and a chic haircut, she looked like she’d stepped out of an original vintage store and somehow managed to make herself look impeccable. (so many girls get vintage wrong, don’t even get me started.) Opening with “Bullets”, Bic has the kind of voice that melts you on the spot whilst sending chills up your spine. She has that rare talent of being able to sound pure and innocent, yet at the same time her voice oozed sex appeal and huskiness. Her casual banter between songs made the show feel exclusive, feeling like we were her friends instead of a crowd of strangers. A lot of new tracks were played, but there was still room for the old too, an entertaining mixture to listen to and a sure fire way to avoid boredom. Nobody seemed to dare sing a long in fear of spoiling the trance-like atmosphere, and therefore Bic’s voice echoed around the room and filled the ears of those who sat and watched her, in awe. On CD, her voice is nowhere justified as good as it is live, with diverse vocals and pretty lyrics, this really is an adorable woman who can definitely sing.

With a cute little sit down venue, drinks that were served with napkins underneath (albeit a little pricey but worth it), a small stage and a relaxed atmosphere, this was definitely one of the most chilled out and enjoyable gigs I have been to in a while and BicÂ’s music is definitely worth delving into. And when you can sit down peacefully with a beer and a cigarette and donÂ’t have to worry about being squashed/pushed/trod on and watch someone sing their heart out, then you canÂ’t really complain can you?
