The Black Velvets

Manchester Academy 3 on Fri 15th Apr 2005

Picking my way through the gothic faces of fans waiting to see Cradle of Filth and Artyeru who were playing at the other university stages I was anxiously looking for cowboy boots and Stetson to check out the fans of the Black Velvets. Well with a name like that they must be country mustn't they?

Inside the venue and not a Stetson in sight. Getting trendy these country fans. Then the lights dim and on step the Black Velvets and all becomes clear. Not country tune in sight. This is pure rock at it's finest.

Before we wall rush out to cite the trade descriptions act there are actually some similarities to the name. The slick dark sound for one. The smooth sound. Enough already. Put simply, the Black Velvets rock. Their name has been around for a while but I have never come into contact with them until now. I am sure it wont be the last time.

The highlight is the last single 3345 which has the small but excited crowd bopping along.

It's a shame that they were first band on and caught the first dregs of the crowd. This is a band that have supported the Who and they deserve better. Hopefully I'll catch them soon with their own crowd. Look out for the Velvets, this wont be the last you'll hear of them.
