The Music

Carling Apollo, Manchester on Wed 22nd Dec 2004

At Manchester's Carling Apollo on the eve, of the eve, of Christmas Eve support band The Dead 60s, warmed up the audience with a short but sweet set before the main attraction took to the stage.

Taking a break from touring with Incubus in the US, The Music are one of those bands that you really need to see live to appreciate just how good they are. Opening with the title track from their second album, 'Welcome To The North', the seated were standing and the standing were bouncing.

If you saw lead singer Rob dancing in a club you would turn and run, with his hair whipping, erratic foot movements and crazy jazz hands he definitely belongs on a stage. With limitless energy they bound into 'The Truth Is No Words' followed by big chart success, 'Freedom Fighters'.

For 'Human', Rob donned a guitar and his movements were restricted to an overactive audition for a hair advert. Just when you thought it might be time to sit down again, 'The People' kept you standing. Forthcoming single 'Breakin' came next and will hopefully cement the bands success this year and get them the chart recognition they deserve. 'Getaway' had everybody singing along as did 'I Need Love', 'Too High', and single off the first album; 'Take The Long Road And Walk'.

Building up to a climactic end, the penultimate song 'Bleed From Within' was a rock anthem in waiting, punctuated with dazzling lights and ending with a three-man drum solo. With no encore following, 'Disco' was the last song of the night.

For a young band they gave a mature performance, brimming with controlled energy The Music are good musicians and great live band.
