The Killers

Manchester Academy on Fri 12th Nov 2004

After wowing sizeable festival crowds with their distinctive blend of indie rock and roll, The Killers returned to the UK to play just a handful of dates, including the intimate Manchester Academy. Needless to say these were the hottest tickets in town, there was a profound shortage of tickets outside the venue and those unlucky enough not to have a ticket before hand were paying up to £125 a ticket to catch the hottest new band about (the face value was £13!)

After what seemed like an eternity the support band, Ambulance ltd, finally took to the stage. They were warmly received by a reasonably sized crowd and no doubt they will have gained a few extra fans with their unique sound. However they kept their set short and sweet, well aware of what the crowd had really come to see.

The crowd started to pack in and soon a typically hot Manchester Academy was packed to the rafters with a sell out crowd of approximately 1000. At around 9:25 the lights dimmed and The Killers interesting introduction blasted out, it was none other than the Frankie Valli classic "Can't take my eyes off you".

The crowd sang along passionately before Brandon Flowers and his band finally took to the stage. Brandon briefly let on to the crowd before the band roared straight into smash hit "Mr, Brightside". The band were almost drowned out by the crowd sing along and this was the way it was to be for much of the set.

The stand out tracks were "Somebody Told Me" and "Indie Rock n Roll" which were both met with huge cheers. The band left the stage after just 35 minutes, before returning to play the encore which consisted "Jenny was a friend of mine" and then the "All these things that I've done" which was lapped up by the ecstatic crowd who sang every word.

The show lasted just 50 minutes but was well worth every penny. It was a faultless display which was well received by a typically vocal Manchester crowd and if they continue on this form you can bet that The Killers will be around for a long time to come.
