How did the band get together?
Howard and John are brothers, so they had no choice really. The rest of us have known each other for a while through friends and playing in other fairly awful bands, I guess it was a stroke of luck that we were all available and looking to start a new project.
What/Who are your musical influences?
We have a huge range of influences between the five of us, it sometimes gets pretty heated when we're trying to finish writing a song. At the moment we're listening to a lot of Perfume Genius, Brontide, First Aid Kit, Blink-182, Ane Brun, Meshuggah, Q Lazzarus, Noosa, Katy Perry, Bruce Springsteen, High Contrast, Cocteau Twins, Kelly Clarkson, Converge...
How would you describe your genre?
We jokingly called it "Scando-Pop" when we first started, because we didn't really fit a specific genre. I guess that kind of stuck with a few of the blogs, however someday we hope to be remembered for our songs rather than any particular genre.
Where do you get your inspiration to write?
Anything and everything. We're all writers and we're constantly noodling around on anything we can get our hands on, our phones are completely full of random ideas and riffs. We recently wrote a song by singing Welsh road signs whilst driving our van on tour... not sure it's any good, but we'll find a use for it someday!
I read that Froydis and John have known each other for a while, can you tell me the story behind this?
The truth is actually incredibly dull, so we will continue to lie about how we met because it's more fun. Frøydis met John at astronaut training school in a galaxy far, far away.
Froydis - Would you say being from Norway has provided you with different influences for your music?
Norway is a tiny country, but it's full of music. I grew up in the 90s as a quiet little pop child, but as I got older I really started to appreciate the diversity and the odd music that comes out of this place. The Norwegian nature is always in the back of my mind, and I suppose the direct result is that every song I write seems to include a tree or two.
How long have you guys been on the live scene and been writing together?
We played our first gig together in December 2013, so not long at all. We've been writing slightly longer than that, probably just under a year as of August 2014.
I saw you support The Joy Formidable at the Globe in Cardiff and my partner and myself thought you were amazing, you blew our minds, not very often you can say that about a support band! Was the Joy Formidable your biggest to date? How did you find the audience?
Thank you very much, supporting The Joy Formidable was absolutely the biggest crowd we've played to so far. Ritzy actually invited us to support after playing our song 'Machines' on their podcast, so of course we said yes. We couldn't believe the response from the audience, it was amazing. After our set, we had loads of people coming up to us asking for photos and stuff. Very surreal.
When can we expect a single and album, and even a tour under your own steam?
We've been busy writing tons of material since 'Machines' dropped, so we're really excited about finally sharing it with people. We're booking some studio time with an up-and-coming producer right now, and we plan to self-release something this Autumn. As for an album... we'll cross that bridge when it comes!
We've also just been picked up by Primary Talent, booking agents for Lana Del Ray, Alt-J, The 1975, No Doubt etc, so there will be plenty of live dates too. Keep an eye out on facebook.com/sunupofficial and twitter.com/sunupofficial for the latest news!
What do you think the future holds for 'Sun Up'?
We're friends first and foremost, so we want to enjoy each other's company and have fun. But we work really hard, and are focused on writing the best songs we can. If people like what we're doing, then obviously that's wonderful and incredibly humbling. Beyond that, the sky's the limit...!
