eGigs talks to Juju from Little Fish

at the Brighton Great Escape Festival on Sat 17th May 2008

How did you and Nez meet?
It was in a fish a chip shop actually. I was slagging off drummers, and Nez, being a drummer, came over to put me right! and we went from there.

If you could be your age now, but in the 60s 70s or 80s which would it be?
JJ: (enthusiastically) The 70s. For the Beatnik Punk! Which is what we are really. Patti Smith, Velvet underground... Bob Dylan... All of them doing their stuff. Punky Poetry Rock.

Is that how you would describe yourselves?
JJ: We're a Beatnick Punk band. With melodies, with songs. And attitude. A bit on the edge.... (smiles) and we're slightly kooky....

Music is obviously your big passion in life, do you have other passions in your life or are you doing exactly what you want to do?
Well this my big passion, but I also love sport. I used to play a lot of basketball, I played for South West England. I swim a lot too. Nez is the same, he's really good at karate and has been doing it for years. Sports a good discipline and I really enjoy it. It was either that or drugs. I did the drugs for a while, stopped that. Stopped smoking. I had to stop, if I smoke I find it really f*cks with my voice. Some people can do it, I cant. I can't hit the high notes and smoke.

You do a lot of screaming, have you based that on someone, or has someone influenced you?
I'm not influenced... I'm inspired...by Patti Smith. I love Patti Smith, and PJ Harvey.

You've just come back from America, on business. Tell us about that.
You've done your research! Yeh, it was about a month or ago, and it was to see Linda Perry from ANI. Her A and R man spotted us playing.

What's your favourite season and why?
Er. Autumn, yeah Autumn. Because the sun is still out, but its fresh. and the colours of the leaves and the trees are all colourful, and you reminisce about the summer days and its all warm and you know your still in love....

So, are you seeing anyone?
Maybe...

It's Ok, you don't have to answer that.
No, I answered, maybe! (laughs)

What were you and Nez both doing before you met?
Hmm. I had had just finished university and I was in London, waitressing. Nez is a carpenter by trade. So he was doing carpentry, which he still does now.

Were you actively looking for a drummer?
Yeah, yeah... I tried a few but I never found the right one.

Is there a dream venue that you would love to play in? You can invent one. (Egigs suggest a floating stage in the ocean where the audience are floating about in boats)
That one would be cool, that'll do! and it has to be warm, like in the Caribbean...

Right that's it you're done! Thanks Juju!
Thanks girls.
