Evanescence

NEC, Birmingham on Fri 31st Oct 2003

Looking around the audience that had gathered for Evanescence- it was interesting to see that there was not many Goths, I`d have expected the audience to be filled with them as Evanescence are portrayed as being quite a dark, gothic, band with a slight blend of radio friendly pop music. Considering it was Halloween as well, it was quite disappointing to see that only a handful of people had made the effort to dress up in costume.

As soon as the black backdrop fell to the floor to reveal Evanescence on stage, the guitarist was dressed in full Halloween costume with his face painted like an evil clown. But the best was yet to come...

Lead singer Amy Lee strolled on stage dressed in a full wedding dress, complete with a couple of spiders attached to it. At least Evanescence had made an effort to dress up in costume.

Amy placed herself at a keyboard in the centre of the stage to play the opening track ‘Haunted’ which was impossible to hear because of the thunderous applause coming from the audience.

From the quiet spooky melodies of Haunted, the band then raised the pace and belted out ‘Going Under’, which went down a treat. Amy Lee certainly knows how to captivate an audience. She has that special charm which makes it near impossible to take your eyes of her.

Almost every song from their debut album ‘Fallen’ was performed, but without a doubt most of the crowd were just waiting to hear ‘Bring me to Life’ which was played towards the end of their set, and naturally the entire audience erupted with life throughout the song.

The music was great and the lighting brilliantly reflected the mood of the songs, which made this one of the more memorable gigs of 2003.
