Martin Kemp (an audience with)

Town Hall, Stourbridge on Fri 28th Oct 2016

Unfortunately I'm the wrong side of Forty, nearly Fifty as it goes. I loved my teenage years, I think the music in the 80's has been the best it's ever been through all the decades, but that's just my opinion.

My Partner is a tad younger than me so doesn't understand the attraction of Spandau Ballet, The Police and T'Pau and the big rivalry between Durannies and Spandau fans. But I've dragged her here tonight so she can see the totty that is Martin Kemp.

I have been a Spandau fan since the release of 'Parade' and have followed them since that day, I was so ecstatic when they got back together again a few years ago, made my day, and I suppose many other women in their Forties.

Tonight was about an audience with the Silver Fox, the hottest bass player from my generation, I have always had a soft spot for Martin Kemp, even much so after all the trials and tribulations of his life, and I was looking forward to hearing all about it.

A pop star pin-up back in the day, adorning many a teenage girls bedroom wall, mine included, even if the poster was a tad pornographic in my Dad's eyes., "Michelle will you take that down, they've both got their trousers open", I couldn't see what my Dad was going on about, but now looking back, it was kind of risqué for the time. My Dad was seriously outraged at his teenage daughter having a poster of the Kemp Brothers, smoking cigars, with their trousers open, on her wall, but I was a teenage girl, and I thought they were both hot. I think the only reason it stayed on the wall was cause my Mom was of the same opinion. (And she could stare at it whilst she made my bed). Poor Dad!

Up close and personal with Martin Kemp, with those smoulderingly good looks, serious eye candy to all the forty-something ladies here tonight, who could fail NOT to get excited?

The first leg of the tour was so popular that a few more dates had been added, unfortunately I missed the show at the Robin 2 in Bilston a while back, and thought if the opportunity arose to see him and hear his stories I would jump at the chance of a ticket, so here we are tonight.

The Silver Fox graced the stage at Stourbridge Town Hall for his show 'An Audience with Martin Kemp'. This was an intimate evening where he shared his life story, from growing up in north London to fulfilling his dream of joining his brother's band, enjoying worldwide success and his happy marriage to beloved wife Shirlie.

As funny stories go, he's got plenty up his sleeve. Whether it be talking about Spandau's massive egos (they turned up to the Band Aid recording in a flash limo and apologised to the people of Ethiopia for not having time to tour there that year), the intense rivalry with Duran Duran on and off stage (both bands hired Learjets to 'race' to a studio recording and competed to drink the most at parties) or his first date with Shirlie (she'd taken along her mate George Michael).

But for all of the highs of his pop, film and TV success, he admitted that his eventful life has also had its lows. He spoke of battling two brain tumours, the break up of Spandau Ballet and the in-fighting that followed, which he compared to a family falling apart.

Throw in other tales about meeting Ronnie Kray in Broadmoor as research for his leading role alongside brother Gary in 1990 British classic The Krays, his tiered wedding cake made entirely of dope and being held at gunpoint in Rio only to discover it was an undercover cop who wanted his autograph - the audience was given a fascinating insight into his rollercoaster life.

He looked at complete ease as he recalled the milestone moments in his life, building up a good rapport with the female-heavy audience and smirking at the whoops that rang around the venue after peeling off his leather jacket to reveal a skin-tight black t-shirt. It's hard to believe he was once sent to drama classes by his mother to combat terrible shyness as a youngster.

For the last 10 minutes of the show, he took questions from the crowd before personally thanking everyone with a brief meet and greet as they left the venue.

Tonight was about seeing and hearing the 'Real' Martin Kemp, he didn't disappoint, he was easy on the eye, even now in his Fifties and still as fit as a butcher's dog, he could've worn a bin bag and let's face it he would still have oodles of sex appeal, Shirlie's a lucky women. I might get to meet the man in person one day!
