Vampires Rock

Palace Theatre, Mansfield on Sat 14th Feb 2015

Now in its 11th and final year, Vampires Rock is a musical stage show that has sold out venues up and down the UK. Not to mention a few festival appearances along the way too. This latest tour was aptly named the final countdown tour.

For those of you who have been living under a rock in the middle of nowhere and are unfamiliar with Vampires Rock, it is set in 2030 at the Live and Let Die Club in New York City. The club owner Baron Von Rockula (Steve Steinman) is searching for a new bride. So the club runs an audition night to discover a new singer. An unsuspecting lady by the name of Pandora (Hayley Russell) attends the audition and immediately Baron Von Rockula pulls out all of the stops to convince Pandora to become his new bride.

The story unfolds with a shed load of gigantic rock anthems squeezed inbetween the witty dialogue such as 'Welcome to the Jungle', 'Sweet Child O'Mine', 'Bat Out of Hell', and 'Jump'. Obviously the cast would not get away without slipping 'The Final Countdown' into the show. As well as the big anthems they have also managed to balance it with some of the more famous ballads such as 'Total Eclipse of The Heart'.

The songs are delivered with the force of 18 wheeler juggernaut and each cast member is talented enough to be able to have their fair share of the limelight. The janitor Bossley (John Evans) is able to step it up a gear when it comes to his performances of 'The Final Countdown' and 'Jump'.

Hayley Russell does a sterling job of belting out anthems such as 'Poison' and 'Total Eclipse of the Heart', and her voice is great for accompanying Steve Steinman's vocals throughout the evening.

Some unexpected songs are thrown into the mix such as 'Sweet Dreams Are Made Of This' with the casts own little blood splattered twist stamped on it for good measure.

The musicians as always look like they are having a bloody great time belting out some of the biggest rock anthems known to man. Guitarists Matt Watson and Richie Barlow play with such laser precision and bassist Mary Garner keeps the consistent pulse of the music - like a pounding heart!

This years show had a different ending in comparison to previous years. However it's not for me to spoil it for fans who still have tickets to see the show this year. All I can say is that the ending leads seamlessly into the next musical - Ghost train.

Despite this musical being fangtastic to watch, it has been in need of a much needed revamp. (pun intended). Ghost train looks like it is going to be the resurrection that Vampires rock requires...

Vampires Rock is a guaranteed night of entertainment and well delivered music.
