Bouncing Souls / Cheap Girls / Luther

The Cockpit, Leeds on Wed 20th Mar 2013

On this cold night I was looking forward to a warm venue. Unfortunately, even with the room full from the start, it takes a while to warm up. Bouncing Souls have brought their record label buddies Luther along and also the Cheap Girls. I wonder how many people in the audience who have not heard of the Cheap Girls (like myself) will be wondering what they are in for. Personally I am imagining the Cheap Girls band from the 1986 film 'The Money Pit'.

Luther

Luther are a band signed to Chunksaah Records, the Bouncing Souls very own label. They are a band with catchy hooks, although the vocals on this occasion seem to be overpowering the guitars so it's hard to hear the melodies. We are in the middle room of the Cockpit, not the usual end room, which personally I think has a worse sound than this room.

Cheap Girls

To my disappointment the Cheap Girls do not come on stage with big beards wearing pink bridesmaids dresses and saying they want to change their name to Meryl Streep. They are a trio of pretty normal looking guys playing songs reminiscent of Sugar, The Replacements and Soul Asylum in parts. The bass heavy riffs and guitar melodies are keeping the crowd in place.

The same crowd are getting a bit wild before the Bouncing Souls take to the stage. They appear just as the sound of Prince's 'Let's Go Crazy' kicks in. Merch guy Matt, who made all the videos for latest album 'Comet', has been busy producing videos for the back wall, so this really enhances the show.

Bouncing Souls

The band have been asking on Facebook for set list requests, and I'm chuffed that three of the ones I and many others asked for are included; their cover of Avoid On Thing's 'Lean On Sheena', 'Ship In A Bottle' and 'Kate Is Great'. The set list has songs from all of their nine album back catalogue, and singer Greg Attonito, bassist Bryan Kienlen, guitarist Pete Steinkopf and drummer Michael McDermott are on fire. They say this is the warmest the venue has been all day!

The bustling mosh pit choose a few requests in the form of 'The Gold Song' and 'East Coast Fuck You!'. Great choices! From 1994's 'I Like Your Mom' to 2012's 'Comet', every song is a hit to this crowd. 'Hopeless Romantic' and 'True Believers' are always the standout tracks, it's nice to see Greg on the acoustic guitar for 'Ship In A Bottle' too.

It's only been 10 months since they last toured 'Comet' on these shores, but the responses to it are stronger than ever. Great show.
