Orson / 747's / Undercut

Leeds Metropolitan University on Tue 23rd May 2006

Labelled by some as “one of Britain’s most promising bands” Undercut are a loud quintet playing punchy guitar focused music. They are not to be confused however with the New Jersey hardcore metal band of the same name. The crowd are well up for it, though they look like a different type of fan to who usually turns up at the Met (nicely clothed, nice hair, not the type to mosh). And the place is packed. I have never heard of any of the bands on the bill, especially “sensations” Orson.

747's

The 747's were completely unexpected with their blend of honky-tonk rhythms, perfect for a sunny day (what’s one of those?). They are appearing at a number of festivals (I.O.W, Oxygen, TITP, Carling Weekend), and I can see them being a big hit if the weather’s fine. For a group that grew from being Irish buskers (check out their frying pan percussion) to supporting some top indie bands (The Kooks, The Strokes) the mixture of olde plodding beats and good tunes like ‘Night and Day’ and ‘Equilibrium’ make this a band to watch.

Orson

California’s Orson (at first I thought they are called Awesome. Imagine the big heads - “Hi kids, we’re Awesome!”) appear like they are music gods that have been about for centuries. Although they have a decade of experience behind them there are only two singles out at the moment, ‘No Tomorrow’ and album namesake ‘Bright Idea’, a catchy number showing the strength of the boys talents. Shifting from poppy soft rock to funky soul, and throwing in the occasional ballad like ‘Look Around’, Orson deserve the large crowd in attendance. The stunning vocals of Jason Pebworth can handle the power of the band’s changing direction of genres. Though it must be said they are not for me, but I recognise the talent that is going to be huge some time soon.
