Fuck Buttons

The Other Rooms, Newcastle upon Tyne on Wed 23rd Sep 2009

Tonight's show in Newcastle was hailed as the 'Gig of the Week' in Monday's Guardian, and judging by the healthy turnout, word is definitely spreading about the band who until recently struggled to gain popularity due to their name.

Aside from having one of the best and original names in music today, the Bristol two-piece, Fuck Buttons, know how to make a racket. Bringing with them their table of effects and pedals, the band played for just under an hour, delivering a fantastic performance from start to finish, continuing each song into the next effortlessly, and offering the Newcastle audience a real taste of shoegaze electronica.

Having formed in 2004, Andrew Hung and Benjamin Power have continuously performed live, regularly featuring at the All Tomorrow's Parties festivals, who similarly have signed the band to their own record label.

It's for this very reason that we find the band on tour around the UK at the moment, promoting their new album 'Tarot Sport', released in the middle of next month, and the preceding single 'Surf Solar'.

Their debut album, 'Street Horsing', released only last year, was highly regarded amongst many media outlets, including the likes of Mojo and Pitchfork, and their latest effort, on the basis of tonight's performance, seems likely to be well received again.

Songs new and old such as 'Colours Move' and 'Olympians' combined very well together, but new single 'Surf Solar' was simply sublime. A combination of the light show, the smoke machines and atmosphere only added to the performance, but from watching both Andrew and Benjamin, it's clear that they love playing live, and that they're well rehearsed, delivering a very tight set and continually dancing away throughout their set, staring at each when they knew that changes to the song's were due. It was remarkable to watch, as it's clear that not many bands seem this dedicated any more.

As I mentioned the whole set was seamless and continuous, with no breaks in the music, like all good electronic acts should play live, and this only impressed me more.

Ending their set, the band left with no encore to rapturous applause, and those that were new to the band were certainly converted with many people I spoke to only declaring their praises.

I myself found myself speechless in awe throughout many parts in the set, simply enjoying what I was witnessing. The forward thinking band are continually progressing and definitely need to be witnessed. The band was on tour in the UK until September 27th and they return in December to once again play the All Tomorrow's Parties birthday festival. Catch them in the small venues where the atmosphere is just right while you can. You won't be disappointed.
