General Fiasco

The Lamp, Hull on Sun 1st Mar 2009

In my last review for this website I stated with vigour how Mongrel and their genre-blending antics were the most aptly named in Britain, however only a couple of weeks from making this statement I find myself in awe of General Fiasco's admirable abilities to live up to their band name. This is a rather harsh opening sentence, agreed, but allow me to explain.

The Hull Lamp, advertising itself rather tenuously as an 'arts' bar, is an interesting little venue full with various eccentrics. With its wine bottle candles, social club feel and walls embellished by local artists it does set a good tone and has a potentially excellent atmosphere. This would be the perfect place for a more melancholy, self conscious act but really doesn't suit the 'up and coming' sounds of Indie expunged that evening.

General Fiasco

Modern indie music takes up a huge proportion of the British charts and has always polarised the nation since it stopped referring to interesting bands like Pavement or Pixies and became a vague term for whatever was banal, guitar-based and preferably about a girl you 'just want to hold in your arms' or some other incredibly poignant line like that.

General Fiasco are the absolute embodiment of the all the worst parts of this genre. Everything from their music, to dress sense to their stage presence was a huge and steaming cliché. Even their audience, mainly short-skirted and air-headed young girls who are used to mindlessly dancing to the same beat anyway, were straight out of the manual. No-one else in the venue seemed to be particularly encapsulated by the act, the 'Stood Bored' look being very popular.

General Fiasco

Having seen most of our Indie Saviours live (Razorlight, Arctic Monkeys, Hoosiers) I can't even call General Fiasco a diluted version, and quite possibly are the dullest band in Britain right now. If you fancy a completely unexciting evening where little to nothing happens worth remembering this General Fiasco tour really is the ultimate pilgrimage, but if you have any shred of drive within you and want a more interesting activity I hear that the drying of paint is a particularly enthralling watch; especially compared to the musical equivalent of Uwe Boll I saw that evening.

General Fiasco, up and coming Indie at its worst. I can think of something else which goes up and is involved in a coming of sorts and I just hope this band has the courtesy to fizzle out in a depressed and tired cigarette, its ash being flicked all across a messy and ashamed bed, in a similar manner.
