soul legend James Brown has died

news: Monday 25th December 2006

James Brown, the man affectionately known as the Godfather of Soul has died at the age of 73.

The singer won a lifetime achievement award at the Grammys back in 1992, and is famous for his hits 'I Got You (I feel good)', 'Living in America', and 'Papa's got a Brand New Bag', among others. He also holds the record for the artist who has charted the most singles on the US Billboard Top 100 without ever hitting a number one on that particular chart (a total of 94).

Brown had been admitted into hospital in Atlanta, where he was diagnosed with pneumonia, but sadly died at 0145 local time (0645 GMT). At the moment the exact cause of Brown's death remains unclear.

Brown only ever achieved one number one hit in the UK (Living in America) but has been immortalised in several different days, one of which being his appearance on the soundtrack to Guy Ritchie's Lock, Stock, And Two Smoking Barrels.

Brown was performing right up to the end and appeared in London this October for the BBC's Electric Proms, alongside bands like The Who and The Good, The Bad, and The Queen. Last month he was inducted into the UK Music Hall of Fame, and played a ceremony to mark the occasion.

He was one of music's greats and will be sadly missed.
