The songwriter has also penned songs for Garth Brooks, Don Williams and the Dixie Chicks. In 2001 he was elected into the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame, and was BMIs 1994 songwriter of the year.
He died on December 22nd from a rare lung disease known as idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis.
