The Feeling

Nottingham Rock City on Thu 16th Nov 2006

The Feeling have had a very successful career to date, armed with melodic masterpieces such as ‘Sewn’, and ‘Fill My Little World’. Last time they played at Rock City they were merely a support band to The Charlatans, one that very few people had heard of.

This time around though, the venue was packed out and everybody in attendance knew exactly who the Feeling were!

The band arrived on stage to an ear bursting chorus of cheering and applauding. The opening notes of ‘I Want You Now’ reverberated throughout the sold out venue. The adoring fans lapped up every single word and certainly made Dan Gillespie (vocalist) and the other band members feel very welcome indeed.

The Feeling are one of those bands that are really down to earth and the trappings of success haven’t quite gone to their heads at the moment. In between songs Dan would amuse the audience with stories of how great it was to be opening a music store and cutting the ribbon with a pair of golden scissors that just didn’t cut anything! These stories were refreshingly down to earth and unlike some bands that like to say really clichéd rock n roll things like ‘Oh me and (insert megastar name) were hanging backstage at (insert name of trendy bar) and decided to do (insert an act of stupidity like driving a car at high speed whilst high on cocaine).’ The Feeling seemed to really connect with the audience.

The Feeling

It goes without saying that their music was an absolute pleasure to hear live. They delivered all but one track (Kettle’s On) from their mega selling ‘Twelve Stops and Home’ album.

Their were plenty of chances for the audience to sing along with melodic masterpieces such as ‘Fill My Little World’ and ‘Never Be Lonely’ which will always be classic sing along tunes.

Their biggest and in my opinion still their best track ‘Sewn’ was saved until near to the end of the evening and as much as I enjoy hearing the audience sing, they were singing their hearts out to such a level that it was near impossible to hear Dan’s vocals.

The Feeling

There were also a few surprises thrown in like their storming cover version of The Buggles hit ‘Video Killed The Radio Star’. Which went down extremely well with the crowd. The Feeling also managed to even slip in a new track from their next album which I think was called ‘Join With Us.’ And again it sounds like they have stuck with their formulaic song writing formula to produce another melody driven album.

This gig was one of those gigs where there are no fancy gimmicks just good solid music, which is in a league of its own. Admittedly at times their music does sound a bit like Supertramp and 10cc but to be fair most of their fans are at an age that they probably aren’t old enough to remember who those bands are.

If the Feeling come to a venue near to you- I highly recommend that you catch them, you will not be disappointed!!!
