Cord

Dundee Westport Bar on Thu 26th Oct 2006

It’s official – if there was any doubt before – the summer of live gigs is now well and truly in the distant memory – only a smattering of people braved the near-gale force winds and freezing cold to see Cord play a set in the cities Westport bar.

Having just released new album ‘Other Peoples Lives Are Not As Perfect As They Seem’ which has been bizarrely snubbed by Radio 1, it’s a disappointment for the band, and an instantly forgettable support from Non-Zero doesn’t do much to help get an atmosphere amongst the forty-fifty odd people who turned up.

When Cord do take the stage, they throw away their single, and arguably best song ‘Winter’ very early, and there are a few people who are dancing, but it’s a deep shame to see such a lot of space left in front of the stage. It’s very tempting to try and make the usual Starsailor/Embrace/Coldplay comparisons, but there is something darker and louder lurking in the bands sound, and lead singer James Leeds prowls the stage like a young Morrissey.

Latest release ‘Sea Of Trouble’ is one of those songs that end up being huge if it was placed on an advert or given some radio air-time, and you can’t help but feel that unless someone with a mainstream audience gives Cord a chance, they’re a band that undeservedly will end up on a slippery slope.

As set closer ‘I’m Leaving You’ draws to a close, we can only hope that Cord won’t be leaving us for a long time yet.
