Paramore

Manchester Club Academy on Fri 13th Oct 2006

Paramore. The hottest new band on the pop punk scene with a 16 year old female singer pulling in all the emo boy fans. Life is sweet for Williams and her band, with pop punk being arguably the most easiest market to break at the moment and a huge rise in UK interest.

On CD, Williams’ vocals are powerful and explosive. For such a young and petite vocalist, her range is impressive. Small lungs and a loud voice, this is one girl to watch.

A surprisingly odd choice of venue deciding on Club Academy, located in the dingy and spacious basement of Manchester Union. Surrounded by teenage girls, sexed up emo kids and the odd punk, I felt a little out of place and old to say the least. Within minutes the basement was full and the bar unsurprisingly stood rather derelict (a lack of ID I would imagine.) Pushing and shoving commenced right away, and I soon became aware that I was at a youth club-esque gig. A lack of alcohol managed to condense the raging hormones surrounding me. Thank god.

One of the things that primarily drew me to Paramore was basically Williams herself. Entering on stage, you are suddenly aware of just how tiny this girl really is. And the minute she opens her mouth, I am literally blew back from the sheer volume that escapes from her lungs. Working the crowd in a rather coy manner, with a bizarre t shirt stating “Paramore is a band”, the opening track “Emergency” sent the crowd into a frenzy. Literally. This is where I felt Paramore had their downfall. Their fans. Pushing and kicking and generally not giving a crap to anyone around them, I was stuck in a room with children that felt the need to kick and scream their way to the front. FYI – you don’t reserve a spot at a gig. Get over it.

Despite this awful set back, Paramore played most of the album (excluding ‘Brighter’ which was a disappointment as it’s probably one of the best tracks on the album) but with its highlights, the moody “All we know” and the more uptempo “Here we go again” made up for this indefinitely.

A highly rated band. There is a severe lack of young female talent for this required music genre and Hayley Williams is a star on the rise. With more practice, persistence and coverage, Paramore really could be the band to watch out for.
