The Pipettes / The Hot Puppies

Newcastle University on Thu 28th Sep 2006

It's freshers week in Newcastle, and that can only mean one thing... no, I don't mean pissed-up eighteen year olds. I'm talking about the return of live music to the uni venues. Opening a fantastic winter term calendar is The Pipettes, and I had high hopes, having seen them bring the house down at this summer's Latitude Festival.

Tonight's main support act is the fantastic welsh five piece, The Hot Puppies, who tear through the best of their emotionally charged debut album 'Under The Crooked Moon'. Highlights of this excellent set include 'Green Eyeliner', 'Terry', and the fantastic (albeit grammatically incorrect) ode to heartbreak 'How Come You Don't Hold Me No More'. It is difficult to watch The Hot Puppies and not think they deserve to be playing much bigger stages than this. The quality of the songwriting is matched only by Becky Newman's wonderous voice, and the band can leave the stage with their heads held high, having undoubtedly created a few new fans tonight.

The Hot Puppies

The main draw of the evening is of course The Pipettes. Despite a rapidly growing fanbase, the venue was not as full as I would have expected, but those that did make the effort are treated to a fantastic set from the jive-pop beauties. Opening with 'Sex' and 'Why Did You Stay', we were eased into the set slowly, but by the time the fantastic 'Your Kisses Are Wasted On Me' kicked in, the crowd were bouncing, and it was clear this was going to be a great night.

The Pipettes

The great thing about The Pipettes is that they get the crowd dancing. They make damn well sure that each and every person watching has a good night, and this pays off as the atmosphere at their gigs is always great, and everyone is up for a laugh.

The band work through pretty much all of their storming album, and as well as the better known tracks such as 'Pull Shapes' amd 'One Night Stand', we are treated to a few b-sides including 'Really That Bad', 'Simon Says', and the superb set closer 'School Uniform'.

The Pipettes

It's great to see a band so clearly enjoying themselves, and that enjoyment is contagious. I didn't see one person tonight who didn't look like they had got their money's worth from this gig. If only all gigs were like that, eh?
