Milloy / Pray for Hayden / Above Them / Driveway Speeding

Good grief. I know I shouldn’t complain but what is happening? We’ve buggered it on the global warming front, no going back. Upstairs in The Fenton was the last place I wanted to be on this overly heated Friday evening, if it wasn’t for the superb line up of melodic punk bands. Driveway Speeding had the unfortunate task of playing first, in a room with no ventilation (and I heard that the radiators were on!). Feeling like passing out I could only manage bursts of 5 – 10 minutes watching the Brighton lads, but they have a tight sound, like Leatherface. Singer/bassist Tim has the largest mouth when singing that I have ever seen, sharing the odd vocal with guitarist Jez.



Above Them hail from Pontefract and are gaining a large following in West Yorkshire. The trio play heavy melodic punk in the same vain as Biffy Clyro, with time changes to keep you interested (not that you wouldn’t be anyway), but pigeonholing these is like stating the type of music from the Scots individualists. Near on impossible.



Pray for Hayden are a local post-hardcore new wave band (think of At the Dive-in), who still have to deal with a sweltering room even though the sun has gone down. They have a lot of energy and conviction and quite a fan base, though the heat has seen most of them off.


Milloy headlining The Fenton again? Always a good idea. Again not a huge turn out this time for the Wakefield melodic punks due to the heat. Taking a couple of quick breaks (singer Jim has a neck injury, though to look at him you couldn’t tell. Pure dedication.) to store some of the sweat the lads play tracks from debut album ‘More Than a Machine’ and EP ‘Belt Up’; two quality pieces of work. With tight drumming, funky bass and melodic rhythm and lead guitars accompanying harsh vocals, this Jawbreaker style has gained a huge following in Leeds and, home of many a new wave punk tribe, Florida.


Lyrics encompassing everyday expressive sayings and observations fit well into the straight-to-the-point songs, with a fast pace, friendly piss-take banter between the lads and such raw energy it makes you feel drained, but in a good way. Now to cool off!
