She Wants Revenge

Manchester Roadhouse on Wed 19th Jul 2006

Before I delve into this review, I would like to send out a friendly warning to anyone heading to a gig at the Manchester Roadhouse this summer. BE WARNED! The venue has turned into a sauna of the sweatiest variety and does not take kindly to jeans and t shirts so I would advise you to go in next to nothing, or just not at all. It really is quite unbearable.

Apart from this slight glitch, the Roadhouse is fast becoming one of my favourite venues with a small raised stage that allows you to see the band and a good sound system. It’s not too big and yet not too claustrophobic either, giving you that intimate feel.

After standing in the heat for ten minutes with a can of red stripe becoming warmer by the second, my friend and I decided to go outside and get some “fresh” air. Upon standing outside the venue, we noted that She Wants revenge were standing right next to us chatting away, so in true fashion we had that “do we approach them” debate and decided that, yes we probably should and get our picture taken while we were at it. Justin and Adam are a lot more reserved than I imagined, and had very little to say for themselves. When I asked them what a few of their songs were about, they replied with “you make of it what you will I guess” which is a frustrating answer and one I feel bands churn out just to avoid going into detail about why they wrote a song. True, they do not need to justify why something has been written, but sometimes it’s nice to hear a song like “Tear you apart” and know who or what it’s about. However; a picture was taken and hands were shook and off we all went inside to watch the set.

On stage, Justin and Adam are totally different to their off stage personas. Justin carries a look of a younger and more clean cut Bob Marley, sporting black drain pipes, a leather waistcoat, and booted heels and working the stage like it was his own personal haven, gyrating up and down the microphone stand and jumping onto the front of the stage and dancing for the crowd. The band have a fond love for Manchester it would appear, last night being their first time playing in the city renowned for it’s musical roots and which Justin backed "A lot of important people have played here who we love, so this is amazing for us."

The first quarter of the set was fairly mellow, and then “I don’t want to fall in love” was played half way through to bring the crowd to life and give a little energy kick into those of us who were ready to collapse from heat exhaustion. Despite this though, the crowd moved and danced and bopped their heads to “She Loves” and the bands latest single “Tear You Apart”. She Wants Revenge sound a little more toned down than they do on record, but Justin’s voice still remains faultless and his vocal range shows off the talent he holds within himself. Carrying influences from greats like Pulp and New Order (not Joy Division as so many people believe), it is obvious where the bands need for electro and dance has come from, and also the wanting of meaningful and insightful lyrics.

For any Indie/Electro kids wanting a new band to adorn, She Wants revenge have described themselves as your “first and fast love.” A label which I feel is pretty accurate and one that won’t leave you disappointed.
