Mercury Music Prize nominees announced

Muse, Arctic Monkeys and Editors make the short list...

news: Tuesday 18th July 2006

The nominations for the annual Mercury Music Prize have been announced today at a ceremony at the Royal Commonwealth Club in London.

12 acts and their respective albums make up the short list, which was announced by Jools Holland earlier this morning.

The nominations are:
Arctic Monkeys - 'Whatever People Say I Am That's What I'm Not'
Isobel Campbell and Mark Lanegan - 'Ballad Of The Broken Seas'
Editors - 'The Back Room'
Guillemots - 'Through The Windowpane'
Richard Hawley - 'Coles Corner'
Hot Chip - 'The Warning'
Muse - 'Black Holes & Revelations'
Zoe Rahman - 'Melting Pot'
Lou Rhodes - 'Beloved One'
Scritti Politti - 'White Bread Black Beer'
Sway - 'This Is My Demo'
Thom Yorke - 'The Eraser'

Past winners include Franz Ferdinand, Dizzie Rascal, and PJ Harvey, and last year's prize was won by Antony and the Johnsons for their album 'I Am A Bird Now'.

Although many people regard the award as a reflection of the best in British music it has come under criticism for the selective methods used to pick the winner. A small pannel of supposed music 'experts' decide on the winner of the award, which will be announced on September 5th.

The winning album will receive a prize of £20,000 but this title has often been something of a 'kiss of death' for the eventual winners who rarely go on to receive much commercial success after the award.

Interestingly, the awards reputation as being a collection of the best in new British music is likely to be in dispute over the inclusion of Isobel Campbell and Mark Lanegan's album 'Ballard of the Broken Seas', given the fact Lanegan is actually American.
