Lorraine

Too 2 Much, London on Wed 12th Jul 2006

Electropop-invaders Lorraine are a little bit bloody excellent. Like Depeche Mode sucking on icepops, the Norwegian three-piece are a glacier-cool synth-dream. They check all the boxes... cool hair, cool names (like Ole Gunner Gundersen!), cool dance moves and cooler than cool (that’d be freezing) pop songs.

So what could go wrong? A gig in a half empty Soho nightclub for preening media hobknobbers? Perhaps. Tonight at Too 2 Much, a popular transvestite hang-out, Lorraine nearly succumb to the cynicism and apathy that faces them as they take the stage for their brief thirty-five minute set.

As they kick out “Saved” and Ol’ Ole (sorry, couldn’t resist) leers forward into the trench between the audience and stage, he plays a blank face ignoring the collection of bored onlookers sat plumply before him. In his head, he’s probably trying to think of stadiums full of proper fans, and quite rightly too.

Surroundings withheld, under the circumstances, tonight Lorraine are excellent. Each song cuts a fine analogue tune to thriving guitar and drum patterns which culminates to form a series of perfectly tailored three-minute hits. By the time they get to recent single “I Feel It”, it’s clear that if a real electro-pop revival is to take place, it’s going to start here.
